On 30th  September, 2013, His Excellency Fujio Samukawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Malawi handed over a Solar Electricity Generation system to the Government of Malawi. Honourable Ibrahim Matola, MP and Minister of Energy received the facility on behalf of the Government of Malawi.

In February 2010, Japan and Malawi exchanged notes for the implementation of “The Project for Introduction of Clean Energy by Solar Electricity Generation System to the Republic of Malawi”. The grant amounted to 660 million Japanese Yen (equivalent $8.3 million) under “Japan’s Grant Aid Program for Environment and Climate Change”. The project aims at promoting clean energy development, disseminating the use of Solar Power system and reinforces safety for air transport system.  The grant has led to the installation of a Solar Power system at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) premises. This is the first ever solar power project with a connection to the Electricity

Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) grid system in Malawi.

These facilities will generate 830 kilowatts of power and supply to the airport premises and the excess will be added to the national grid system. The project will help the Airport to reduce its operating costs incurred from consuming electricity from Escom.
